How To Improve Your Emotional Intelligence For Better Sales Results

We have already discussed why EQ is important in relation to selling in our article, What is EQ and why is it important for sales?

Now that we understand why it is important, let’s look at a few ways that we can work on and improve the five soft skills that make up emotional intelligence. These skills are key to delivering better sales results. The five skills are:

  • Social skills,
  • Self-awareness,
  • Motivation,
  • Empathy,
  • Self-regulation.

Here are five tips that help you develop these skills further.

Tip One: Develop an assertive communication style

Being assertive rather than too passive or aggressive in sales situations is a good way to earn respect, while also showing respect for others.

Emotionally intelligent people know how to communicate their opinions in the right way. This is a skill you can practice to get the tone right.

Tip Two: Learn to handle criticism well

Avoid getting upset or going on the defensive if a prospect questions you or what you are offering.

People with high EQ take a few moments to try and understand the reasons behind the criticism so issues can be resolved constructively. Practice keeping calm and level headed during criticism and give yourself the time to process it and respond in a measured way.

Tip Three: Become self-aware

Self-awareness is the ability to understand your own emotions and how they affect others around you. Self-awareness not only lets you regulate your own feelings to enhance your sales process but also lets you intuitively pick up on other’s emotions. You can practice understanding body language and use that to improve your communication with prospects.

Tip Four: Be empathetic

Emotionally intelligent people know how to empathize with others and see this as a sign of strength. This trait allows you to relate to prospects on a human level and helps you to build mutual respect.

Tip Five: Improve your social skills

It’s important for any salesperson to appear open and approachable. People with a high EQ smile and give off a positive impression to others.

To improve sales you should develop your interpersonal skills and improve both verbal and nonverbal communication skills.

While high EQ skills may come more naturally to some people, anyone can develop these skills to improve how they interact with others, increase their emotional intelligence levels, and improve their sales process.
