Discover Cara: The Social Platform Helping Artists Fight AI

Have you discovered Cara yet? It’s a  new social platform focused on creatives and artists. There’s a lot of hype around the concept of Cara and the buzz has helped it grow from 40k to 650k users in just a week, showing the demand for a dedicated social platform for creatives outside of the existing mainstream.

Many artists are fed up with Meta’s policy of blatantly using artists’ work to train AI systems. Only those in the EU under the protection of GDPR have the ability to opt out. Even then, many users are complaining about how difficult opting out is with hoops to jump through to turn off permission.

How is Cara Different?

The fact that Cara moved to the top of the Apple download charts shows there’s something here artists are buying into.

Many artists rely on social platforms like Instagram to promote their work and earn a living, so leaving social media altogether is not a viable option. Instead, Cara promises a platform where user data isn’t a product, and they’ve implemented strong privacy measures so artists can focus on connecting without worrying about AI scraping images without permission.

For instance, Cara, partners with the University of Chicago’s Glaze project. By manually applying Glaze to their work on Cara, artists have an added layer of protection against AI.

Marking Art Social

On your Cara profile, you can host a portfolio of work, but you can also post updates to your feed like any other microblogging site.

Cara also has a cool feature called Circles where you create a Circle for your family another for your close friends, and maybe even one for the book club you’re part of, with each Circle allowing for private sharing and conversation, making interactions more intimate and relevant, almost like having multiple mini social networks within one app, tailored to different aspects of your life.

Cara’s StoryTime which isn’t about fleeting 24-hour stories but is a space where users share longer, more thoughtful posts.

Ultimately Cara’s appeal is the way it brings artists and creatives together in a more meaningful way and takes a stance over user privacy and the unethical use of AI at the same time.
